I'm still confused as to whether PvP will continue to be some form of instanced 8 vs 8 or if it will be like an area where anyone can jump into the battle.

I doubt it. ANet made is clear several times that 20 will be the level cap for a looong while (if not ever), and likewise I (sadly) expect weapons and armor not to get any better, just to become different. Its so the whole thing stays balanced and totally interoperable bewteen chapters (if "interoperable" is actually a word - forgive my not-being-nativeness).
So its really a bit like Barbie's Fashion Designer Kit (or at least how I picture that): With more chapters, you can customize your avatar exponentionally and more and more make it look different from the rest, but you won't get any über-items (which is good) but sadly, you won't get any better items presumably either.
(Hey, good thing being not native, allows me to spell "über" with just my regular keys )

Funny, but it could work because a Forgotten gave us the first 15 attribute quest.

Lvl Caps:
/sigh
They ain't changing the lvl caps folks. Anet went through all kind of trouble explaining why the cap is so low. It's not about your level vs my level. It's about your build vs my build, your skilll vs my skill.
Here is another problem with higher skill caps. In WoW the cap was lvl 40. You had to get lvl 40 to kill lvl 50 monstersor whatever. Once you hit lvl 40 and kill all the monsters it gets boring. So they have to raise the cap to lvl 60 to beat bigger, bader monsters. Then that gets boring. Then you end up in this never ending cycle: raise the lvl of the players to fight bigger, bader monsters.
With GW it's about skill. You beat bigger, bader monsters with skill. Take Last Day Dawns for instance, I bet there were a bunch of noobs wanting higher lvl caps so they could beat the those Titans. But they were too n00bish to figure out they either needed a ranger with Winter or a Hydromancer. Once you get the right build Those Titains go down easily. There is no skill in lvling. You'r just rewarded for the amount ot time you play, not the skill and thought you put into your build.
GW is a lot like a trading card game like Yugioh: you have your deck (your unlocked skills) and your hand (your skill bar). Each skill has it's own tactical situation in which is should be used. Most "raise the skill cap people" either don't want to spend time trying to figure this stuff out or they like lvling in games like City of Heros or WoW and just bought the wrong game.

Aaaaah year right, Cthulhu was some sort of squiddish sushi manifestation with tentacles or so - just like Zoidberg ... now I get it
(Excuse me, never read the book, googled up Cthulhu once a long while ago, so the link wasn't totally obvious to me ... good one, nevertheless).

Not that there's anything wrong with that ... who wouldn't enjoy playing with a level 10E14+247,194,882 R/Me ...

If Yugioh is anything like Magic The Gathering, then your skill bar is your hand, your unlocked skills are your deck, and the locked skills are all the other 6500 cards you rarely have a chance of owning all without dedicating all your free time to it, which you keep reading about on websites wondering how to combo them for the greatest effect, and wherein Elite skills are the equivalent of rare AND legendary cards ... only one in play at a time.
Hm ... this is such a close match, I wonder if it would be fun to come up with a Guild Wars Trading Card Game, for the time when you can't connect to the net and the addiction gets too strong ...

So this is how Guild Wars is making money
No monthly fee, that's true, and there never will be. But Anet will release two "expansions" every year, each with new content and possibly new classes*. These will cost money, here in Sweden the retail price over the counter is about 50 USD. You can probably get a copy cheaper if you buy it online, but fact is this will add up to be a pretty hefty sum over time.
Two expansions every year for 50 USD each, that's 100 USD a year - 8.30 USD a month. I don't know what other MMOs cost, but it's still a sum to consider.
*I don't have the energy to point out where this is information is taken from, if you've read all the statements from Anet you know this to be a fact.

Easily.
If this game had a monthly fee comparable to MMOs (~$15 USD) I would pay to play it.

This has never been a secret, it was stated from the beginning that this would be the method of revenue. I think most MMO's are around 15 per month, regardless of how many hours you play or don't play. At least with GW you have the choice of buying the expansions and can choose to play other games without the guilt of paying for something you don't use.

the information is on the GW site.
OPTIONAL REMEMBER?
you can wait 3-4 months (or longer) for the price to drop before getting it.
you can pick which ones you want.
monthly fees are not optional and go on even if you dont play
big difference to me

Why the sarcasm? Where did I state my own opinion about this system of payment, or the amount in question? It's just the facts as I understand them.

For me at least, its a lot easier to pay $50 after 6 months compared to $10-$15 per month. ANet is pretty smart though, you cant remain competitive without buying the expansions since each one will bring new professions and balance changes. So you can either buy the next chapter, or suck.

The difference is that you have the option to purchase the new content or not. You can read reviews, test it and evaluate it BEFORE you spend the money. And that cost may go down over time, especially at large retailers that use it as a promotional item to get people in the door.
With a monthly fee you get whatever the provider gives you, whether you like it or not. You have to choose either to quit the game entirely if you don't like the updated content or suck it up and pay for it...

just to echo the common sense thats filling this thread.
You don't have to buy chap 2
Fact is with 2 expansions a year you KNOW you're getting new content/maps skills as opposed to a monthly subscription were they will do stuff 'when they get round to it'
Stuff gets delayed you don't pay for it till it arrives.
And best bit is you can wait out the initial prices, pick and choose chapters (say they release a PvP slanted chapter and your PvE you can skip it)
